Hiel

חִיאֵל/HYE-el/

Life of God or God lives

Summary

Hiel was a man of Bethel who rebuilt Jericho during Ahab's reign and suffered the loss of his sons in fulfillment of Joshua's ancient curse.

The Curse Fulfilled

Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho during the reign of Ahab, over 500 years after Joshua had pronounced a curse on anyone who would rebuild the city. Joshua had declared: "Cursed is the man who rebuilds this city Jericho; at the cost of his firstborn he shall lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son he shall set up its gates." This curse was precisely fulfilled when Hiel's eldest son Abiram died at the foundation laying and his youngest son Segub at the setting of the gates.
