הַקּוֹץ/HAK-oz/

The thorn

Summary

Hakkoz was the head of the seventh course of priests in the sanctuary service as appointed by David, whose descendants returned from Babylonian exile.

Chief of the Seventh Course

Hakkoz was appointed chief of the seventh of the twenty-four courses of priests that David organized for service in the sanctuary. His name, meaning "thorn," appears with the Hebrew article (ha-Koz), and in some passages the article is dropped, leaving simply "Koz." His descendants are mentioned among those who returned from exile and participated in rebuilding Jerusalem's walls, with Meremoth son of Uriah son of Hakkoz repairing sections of the wall.
