Gatam was the fourth son of Eliphaz, Esau's firstborn, making him a grandson of Esau and a great-grandson of Isaac. He became one of the 'dukes' or chiefs of Edom, establishing a clan that bore his name. His name may derive from an Arabic word meaning 'puny' or from a term for 'burnt valley.'
