Summary

A Canaanite deity worshiped at Shechem, whose name means 'lord of the covenant.'

The Covenant God

Baal-berith ('covenant lord') was worshiped at Shechem by the Israelites after Gideon's death. His temple there contained a treasury from which Abimelech obtained silver to hire worthless men. He is also called simply Berith in a later reference.
