Apphia

/AF-ee-a/

Summary

A Christian woman addressed in Paul's letter to Philemon, traditionally understood to be Philemon's wife.

Recipient of Philemon

Apphia is mentioned in the opening salutation of Paul's letter to Philemon as 'the beloved' or 'our sister.' She was likely Philemon's wife and therefore mistress of the household to which Onesimus the slave belonged. As such, she had a personal interest in the matter Paul addressed concerning Onesimus. The church met in their home at Colossae.
