☩Identity
Amittai is known solely as the father of Jonah the prophet. He was a native of Gath-hepher, a town in the tribal territory of Zebulun. This identifies Jonah as coming from the northern kingdom of Israel, making him one of the few prophets sent to minister beyond Israel's borders. The name Amittai means "true" or "faithful," appropriate for the father of a prophet.
