A Horite, the firstborn son of Shobal son of Seir, also called Alian in Chronicles.

Identity

Alvan was the first named of the five sons of Shobal the Horite of Mount Seir. The Horites were the original inhabitants of the region of Seir before Esau's descendants displaced them. In the parallel passage in Chronicles, his name appears as Alian, representing a textual variant. Some scholars suggest Alvan may be the same person as Alvah, one of the Edomite chiefs.
