Stall

/STAWL/

Summary

A shelter or enclosure for feeding cattle, horses, and other livestock.

Description

A stall (Hebrew 'marbek,' a place for tying up) was used for fattening cattle. 'Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.' Solomon's stalls for horses numbered 40,000 according to Kings, suggesting the extensive royal stables of his kingdom.

Figurative Uses

The calf of the stall was specially fed for sacrifice or feast. Malachi prophesies that those who fear God's name shall 'grow up as calves of the stall.' When the fig tree doesn't blossom and cattle fail in the stalls, Habakkuk declares he will still rejoice in the Lord.
