A pulpit was a raised wooden platform used for public reading of Scripture, as when Ezra read the law to the assembly.

Ezra's Platform

When Ezra read the law to the returned exiles, he stood on a wooden platform (pulpit) made for this purpose, elevated above the people. Thirteen men stood with him. From this elevated position, he opened the book in sight of all the people and read from morning until midday.
