Origin

The Cherethites appear to have been a Philistine clan or tribe, as they inhabited territory in the south of Philistia. The name may derive from Crete, suggesting a connection to the Sea Peoples who settled the coastal region. Ezekiel and Zephaniah pronounce judgment against them along with the Philistines.
