Holm

Summary

A type of evergreen oak tree mentioned in some translations of Isaiah 44:14 among woods used for idol-making.

Context

Isaiah 44:14 describes the idol-maker's process: 'He cuts down cedars, or perhaps takes a cypress or oak [holm tree].' The Hebrew word 'tirzah' is variously identified as holm-oak, cypress, or ilex (evergreen oak). Isaiah's point is the absurdity of using ordinary wood—the same kind used for fuel—to make a god.
