Leasing

/LEE-zing/

Summary

An archaic English word used in the King James Version meaning 'lying' or 'falsehood.'

Definition and Usage

The word 'leasing' appears twice in the King James Version (Psalm 4:2; 5:6), translating the Hebrew 'kazab' which means 'to devise,' 'to fabricate,' or 'to lie.' Modern translations render it as 'falsehood' or 'lies.' The underlying Hebrew word carries the idea of treachery, deception, and deliberate falsehood. In Psalm 4:2, David asks 'how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing?' addressing those who spread lies against him. In Psalm 5:6, he declares that the Lord will destroy 'them that speak leasing' (lies).
