Mephaath was given to the Merarite Levites from Reuben's territory (Joshua 13:18; 21:37; 1 Chronicles 6:79). It was located on the Moabite tableland east of the Jordan. Jeremiah mentions it among Moabite cities facing judgment (Jeremiah 48:21).
