Luhith

לוּחִית/LOO-hith/

Possibly related to 'tablets' or 'boards'

Summary

A Moabite town mentioned in prophetic oracles, apparently located on an elevated position accessed by ascending.

Biblical References

Luhith appears in the prophetic oracles against Moab in Isaiah 15:5 ('by the mounting up of Luhith with weeping shall they go it up') and Jeremiah 48:5 ('In the way of Luhith continual weeping shall go up'). Both passages describe refugees fleeing the destruction of Moab, ascending the road to Luhith with weeping. The name suggests elevation, and the town apparently stood on a height reached by a significant ascent.
