Lebaoth

לְבָאוֹת/leh-BAY-oth/

Lionesses

Summary

A city in the southern territory of Judah, later transferred to Simeon, also called Beth-lebaoth.

Location and Identity

Lebaoth was a city in the extreme south of Judah's territory (Joshua 15:32), later assigned to the tribe of Simeon whose portion was 'scattered' within Judah. It appears elsewhere as Beth-lebaoth (Joshua 19:6), meaning 'house of lionesses,' and as Beth-biri in 1 Chronicles 4:31, likely a clerical variation. The name suggests the presence of lions in the region in ancient times. The site remains unidentified, though some associate it with el-Beyudh in the Negev.
