Ivah

עִוָּא/EYE-vah/

Ruin, or overturning

Summary

A city conquered by Assyria, whose gods could not save it from destruction.

Assyrian Taunt

Ivah appears in Sennacherib's boastful message to Hezekiah, listing cities whose gods failed to save them from Assyria. The Assyrians used such lists to intimidate conquered peoples and challenge the power of Yahweh. The location of Ivah is uncertain but was likely in Syria or Mesopotamia.
