Hadattah

חֲדַתָּה/huh-DAT-uh/

New (a Chaldaic form)

Summary

Hadattah is a term meaning "new" that probably qualifies the preceding place name Hazor in Joshua 15:25, making it "Hazor-hadattah" or "New Hazor."

A Qualifying Term

According to the English versions, Hadattah appears to be one of the towns of Judah in the extreme south. However, the Masoretic accents of the Hebrew text connect the word with the preceding name Hazor, reading "Hazor-chadattah" meaning "New Hazor." This reading distinguishes it from another Hazor mentioned in Joshua 15:23. Eusebius and Jerome speak of "New Hazor" as lying east of and near Ascalon in their day, though this location presents geographical difficulties.
