Summary

A fortified city of Gad east of the Jordan, also known as Beth-haran, later renamed Livias or Julias.

Location and Identity

Beth-aram (also written Betharam) was one of the fortified cities of Gad east of the Jordan, described as being in 'the valley.' It is the same place called Beth-haran in Numbers 32:36. In later times, Herod Antipas fortified it and renamed it Julias (or Livias) in honor of the Roman imperial family. Its ruins are identified with Tell Rameh, opposite Jericho.
