Salah

שֶׁלַח/SAY-luh/

Extension

Summary

Son of Arphaxad and father of Eber in the line from Shem to Abraham, whose name suggests the extension of the Shemitic race.

Identity

Salah (also spelled Shelah) was the only named son of Arphaxad and the father of Eber, from whom the Hebrews took their name. He appears in the genealogy from Shem to Abraham and in Luke's genealogy of Christ. The name is significant of extension—the cognate verb being applied to the spreading of tree roots and branches—perhaps implying the gradual expansion of the Shemitic race from Northern Assyria toward the Euphrates.
