Jakeh

יָקֶה/JAY-keh/

Pious or obedient

Summary

The father of Agur, whose wise sayings are recorded in Proverbs 30.

Identity

Jakeh is named as the father of Agur, the author of the wise sayings in Proverbs 30:1. Nothing more is known of either Jakeh or Agur with certainty. The Hebrew text is difficult, and some scholars have proposed that 'Jakeh' should be understood as a title meaning 'obedience' applied to David, making Solomon (under the name Agur) the actual author. Others take Jakeh as a proper name of an otherwise unknown Israelite, possibly from Massa, an Ishmaelite territory. The Septuagint reading differs significantly, suggesting textual corruption. Some interpreters have connected Jakeh with a queen of Massa in Arabia, making Agur and Lemuel (of Proverbs 31) brothers.
