Jaare Oregim

/JAY-uh-ree OR-eh-gim/

Summary

A Bethlehemite whose name appears in a textually problematic passage as the father of Elhanan, who is said to have slain Goliath; most scholars believe 'Jair' is the correct reading and 'Oregim' is a scribal interpolation from elsewhere in the verse.

Textual Issues

According to 2 Samuel 21:19, Jaare-oregim was a Bethlehemite and the father of Elhanan who slew Goliath. However, in the parallel passage (1 Chronicles 20:5), Jair is found instead of Jaare, and Oregim is omitted. Since 'Oregim' (meaning 'weavers') appears at the end of the same verse describing the size of the giant's spear shaft (as in 1 Samuel 17:7), scholars conclude it was accidentally copied into the middle of the verse. The correct reading is likely 'Jair,' and the slain giant was 'Lahmi, the brother of Goliath.'
