Chuza

/KYOO-zuh/

Summary

The house-steward of Herod Antipas, whose wife Joanna was one of the women who ministered to Jesus.

Herod's Steward

Chuza served as the epitropos (steward or manager) of Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee. His wife Joanna was one of certain women who, having been healed of evil spirits or infirmities, accompanied Jesus and his disciples, ministering to them from their own resources. The presence of followers among Herod's household helps explain why the tetrarch, when he heard of Jesus's fame, turned to his servants for information, as recorded in Matthew 14:1. Joanna is also named among the women who came to the tomb on the morning of the resurrection.
