Beeri

בְּאֵרִי/bee-EE-rye/

Of a well, or expounder

Summary

The name of two men: a Hittite whose daughter married Esau, and the father of the prophet Hosea.

Father of Esau's Wife

Beeri was a Hittite whose daughter Judith became one of Esau's wives. The same woman appears to be called Aholibamah daughter of Anah in the Edomite genealogy, suggesting Beeri and Anah may be the same person—described as a Hittite in the narrative where Esau's Canaanite marriage is emphasized, but as a Horite (cave-dweller) in the genealogy where the connection with Mount Seir's inhabitants is stressed.

Another Beeri was the father of the prophet Hosea, who prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah of Judah.
