Leummim

לְאֻמִּים/lee-UM-im/

Peoples or nations

Summary

An Arabian tribe descended from Dedan, grandson of Abraham through Keturah.

Identity

Leummim is the last named of three sons of Dedan, who was a grandson of Abraham by Keturah (Genesis 25:3). Like his brothers Asshurim and Letushim, the name is in plural form, indicating a tribe or people rather than an individual. The Hebrew word means 'peoples' or 'nations.' They are generally identified with the Allumaeotae mentioned by the geographer Ptolemy as dwelling near the Gerrhaei in Arabia. Some scholars connect them with an ancient Arab tribe called Umeiyim, one of the very early Arabian tribes whose genealogy is not recorded by Arab historians.
