Railing

βλασφημία/RAYL-ing/

Slander, evil speaking, railing

Summary

Railing is abusive, reviling speech condemned in Scripture, with believers warned not to bring railing accusations even against spiritual adversaries.

Forbidden Speech

Railing speech (blasphemia) is listed among sins Christians must put away. Peter warns that even the archangel Michael, when contending with the devil, 'durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.' How much more should believers avoid such speech against fellow humans.

Key verses:Colossians 3:8Jude 1:92 Peter 2:11

Christian Response

When railed upon, believers are to respond with blessing, not counter-railing. Christ, when reviled, reviled not again. 'Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing.'
